  • Maiko will give you a lucky charm called "Senjafuda".

What to expect

What is a Geisha?
A geisha is an entertainer highly skilled in traditional Japanese arts. These skills include traditional Japanese dance, musical instruments, and parlor games called ozashiki.

Geisha vs. Geiko
While most English speakers are familiar to the term "geisha," this word applies to entertainers based in Tokyo. In Kyoto, where geisha culture is most prominent, the term used is "geiko."

What is a Maiko?
A maiko is a geisha in training, often distinguished by colorful kimono and elaborate hair accessories she wears. An aspiring maiko can only debut after years of extensive training. A maiko also typically spends five or so years before graduating to become a geiko.

A short but lovely visit with maiko

We arrived early, as recommended in the program description, but ended up waiting for the previous program to finish before we could enter. Before entering the studio, you need to take your shoes off and leave them on a rack.

Once inside, there are some rows of benches facing towards a low "stage" on one side of the room. After everyone has taken their seats, the maiko enters. The English translator for the maiko was very good. The maiko introduces herself, and there is an opportunity to have your photograph taken with her and receive a slip of paper with her name stamped on it (in Japanese, of course). After everyone has their photograph, the maiko performs two dances. Then there is a question-and-answer session, and then the maiko explains the rules for a drinking game. She and the translator demonstrated the game once, and then the maiko will ask a series of volunteers to come up to the front to challenge her. If you lose, don't worry--you can choose to drink a cup of water instead of sake!

All of this takes place just over a half hour, but it didn't feel particularly rushed. The maiko was very courteous with answering questions and it was fun to play the game against her. I felt like many of the people in our audience were too shy to ask questions or volunteer, but I would encourage people to not be too shy and enjoy themselves!
Amazing esperience with families and friends

Initially, I had booked the Saturday show but it was unavailable. Veltra was able to let me know and gave me a couple of different options to choose from as an alternative. I was able to change my reservation to the Sunday lunch. I would recommend paying extra for the front row and for the lunch. The lunch was a nice selection of Kyoto cuisine. I had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend it if you have a couple of hours to spare.

The meal was an ordinary catering service. The maiko, who said she had only been in the profession for five months, seemed to tremble in her fingertips and around her knees while dancing. I felt sorry for her. I think it would be better to include a note in the experience recruitment stating, "This will take place in a section of a building," as it would change the expectations of those who apply. After the event, when I chatted with other participants, it seemed they had a similar impression.

Is it acceptable for the person in front, who is being greedy, to be satisfied while those behind cannot see?

I've taken the time to come here, and I've paid money, so I want to see the performance.

I left, citing "I want to do some sightseeing" as my reason, but it was a waste of time.

What is a "sen-sha-fuda"? I did not receive one.

Thank you for participating this time. If there are any actions that may inconvenience other customers, our staff will address them, and we will share this internally to ensure more attention is paid during the dance. Regarding the name tag, I understand that you left partway through, and due to the program's structure, it was intended to be handed to you by the maiko during the final photo session, so you may not have received it. I received a reminder email saying that the meeting time was pushed back by an hour, so when I arrived at that time, I was surprised to be told, "We're about to finish." This was a highlight of the trip I had reserved for my mother, and it was the last day. After checking, they said it was a mistake by the tour company's staff, not VELTRA. The staff on the phone apologized profusely, but this is the kind of mistake that a company like this should never make. I said I couldn't pay a cancellation fee for something like this, and after discussing it among themselves, they called me back and said they would arrange for a maiko to come again if I was still in Kyoto. I had to change my plans on short notice and decided to have it redone in the evening. When I arrived, there was one woman there, but there was no apology, and I was taken to the room with the maiko. The maiko was very nice, and it was a fun time as an event, but her kimono was plain, which made me think it was because she was called in suddenly. It's a small thing, but I really felt sorry for my mother, who was looking forward to this. Even when leaving, there were no words of apology. I will never use this company again, nor would I recommend it. It's the worst.

We sincerely apologize for the errors in our communication. We also regret that our staff's apology on the day was insufficient. The maiko who was scheduled to participate initially came as planned, so the kimono was the same. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused, especially since you were looking forward to it. We will strengthen our internal confirmation system and work on staff training and preventing recurrence.

Moreover, there is an aisle between seats B and C, which staff must use to serve the back row, so they frequently walk through that area. When trying to take photos or videos of the maiko, the staff keeps crossing in front of the camera. Although the staff tries to avoid getting in the way, they often end up in the frame.

Even though it’s the front row, I felt like this seat doesn’t really qualify as an SS seat. The AB seats in the second or third row are much better. I suggest that the organizing company reconsider the pricing and arrangement of the seats, or at least make the seating layout clear at the time of booking.

If the seats surround the maiko, everyone can see easily from the front row, but here it was cramped with five people in each of the three rows. Additionally, the front row required an extra 200 yen.
Also, keep in mind that you will be making your own tea based on the maiko's example, and the interaction with the maiko is limited to just two people, so it might feel a bit pricey.

The content met my expectations, which was great. I requested to sit in a special seat for an additional ¥200, but the person in charge was not aware of it, and on the day of the event, my family of four ended up sitting in separate seats. There was only one special seat left, so I purchased it. I wish we could have sat together. It's disappointing.

At Jinmatsu-an, you have to pay 500 yen for seats close to the maiko, which felt unfair. I wish all the seats were chairs so that everyone could see the maiko up close. There was dissatisfaction with being seated far from the maiko and not being able to see them closely. It felt a bit profit-driven to have to pay 500 yen for that. The seating consists of simple tables and chairs, with four people per row, and indeed, the seats closer to the maiko are better if you pay a higher amount.

Once the bento was brought to the table, the event started somewhat casually. The people who were there to experience the tea ceremony began, while those there for lunch started eating on their own, and then the maiko's tea ceremony began. After the ceremony, there was a Q&A session with the maiko, followed by a commemorative photo session with her. I wondered about the traditional games, but it turned out that the event was already over.

It ended surprisingly quickly.

I live in Kyoto and often have the opportunity to visit Gion and the geisha districts. This time, a friend from out of town wanted to meet a maiko, but since a real okiya experience costs several hundred thousand yen, I made a reservation for a beginner-friendly option. Surprisingly, the maiko's dance, the tea ceremony, and the traditional games were all very enjoyable and highly recommended for first-timers. Plus, it's affordable, so feel free to give it a try!

I think it's a good activity, but it needs improvement.

The dinner with the maiko was good, but I was quite concerned about the lack of hospitality from the management.

◆ Difficult to see the stage
Since you are seated, I think the cheapest seats are quite hard to see from. Because you are not sitting on the floor, your view is very limited. However, despite purchasing the cheapest seat, I was upgraded to the next tier due to overbooking by the management, which allowed me to see somewhat better. Without this, I think I would have given it 2 stars.

◆ Staff passing by during the maiko's performance
The stage for the maiko was narrow, and next to it was the kitchen, where staff were moving around to get drinks while the maiko was performing, which was very distracting. There was a partition for the kitchen, but it was a shame that they didn't find a way to avoid passing right next to the maiko.

◆ Question time was not engaging and rather rude
After the maiko's performance, they jumped straight into a Q&A session without any explanation from the maiko, which left us unsure of what to ask, and it felt like my tour guide and I were awkwardly trying to come up with questions. Additionally, when asking about the origins of the foreign guests, the maiko responded with "Where?" to someone from Wales, and the host made a confusing comment saying, "The maiko doesn't know Wales, but she knows Scotland," which was both irrelevant and unclear. It was disappointing that, despite coming to Japan, the hospitality was lacking, and as a Japanese person, it made me feel a bit sad.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions on the number of participants, there were about 10 to 12 attendees. I requested a seat in the front row, but since the venue itself isn't very large, I think sitting in the second or third row would have been fine as well.

On the day of the event, I was the only Japanese person there. It seemed like the foreigners were having a great time. The organizers were desperately trying to liven up the venue, but the maiko seemed disinterested.

Originally, maiko are people you meet in a traditional setting, and it felt unfortunate that they were brought out to such a place. Since traditional experiences can be quite expensive and are not accessible to the general public, I suppose that's why such an arrangement was made. While it was a blessing for someone like me who can't go to a traditional setting, I couldn't help but think about the pride of the maiko.
