Schedule

  1. Pick-up at Miyanoura - Anbo area
  2. Resting Big Rock ⇒ Dragon Drop
You will be overwhelmed by the imposing Resting Big Rock, and as you go further, you will see a view of a single waterfall that looks like a flying dragon falling. The water-eroded rocks are impressive. Below the Azalea Suspension Bridge, the clear stream is refreshing.
  3. Shiratani Unsuikyo Trailhead ⇒ Kusugawa Footpath.
From the "Azalea Suspension Bridge", you can see the waterfall. After that, you will walk through the mossy forest on the Kusugawa Footpath, which was used for logging during the Edo period.

  4. Kuguri-sugi
The "Kuguri-sugi" is a tree with a hollow at the bottom that you can pass through. It took root over a fallen tree, but when the fallen tree rotted away, it left the tree in this unique shape.
  5. Shiratani Unsuikyo Hut.
Take a break at the unmanned mountain hut with a water source and toilet.

  6. Nanahon-sugi ⇒ Mononoke no Mori (Mossy Forest)
Once you pass the "Nanahon-sugi" with its seven spreading branches, you will enter the all-green "Mononoke no Mori (Mossy Forest)". Please experience this fantastical world covered in moss.

  7. Tsuji Pass ⇒ Taiko Rock
From Taiko Rock, you can see the highest peak in Kyushu, Miyanoura-dake, as well as Okudake, Maedake, and the Anbo River. In the spring, the view is beautiful with mountain cherry blossoms blooming all over the place below!

  8. Start descending.
  9. Nanahon-sugi ⇒ Kuguri-sugi ⇒ Three-way junction ⇒ Kusugawa Walkway
Walk towards the Kusugawa Walkway while admiring the large cedar trees such as Nanahon-sugi and Kuguri-sugi. You will walk along a different path than the one you came, this time along a stream.

  10. Satsuki Suspension Bridge ⇒ Hiryu Otoshi ⇒ Ikoino Oiwa ⇒ Shiratani Square
  11. We will prepare a lunch box for lunch.
Please note that the contents may change. Thank you for your understanding in advance.

  12. I will send you to the Miyanoura-Anbo area.

まいにー
A foreign guide with a beard led us, sharing in-depth stories about nature and history as we progressed. I was nervous since it was my first trekking experience, but I was thrilled when I stood on the Taiko Rock and the view opened up. I also became friends with a father and daughter who joined the tour, making it a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

Due to the last-minute reservation, I received emails from other companies stating they couldn't arrange a guide or were still confirming, but I quickly received a confirmation email from this company. The hotel I stayed at was in a location where most tours wouldn't pick up, but they came to get me (there is an additional fee). Since I usually don't drive and toured with a rental car on the day of arrival, I found the signs confusing and kept missing turns, so I was very grateful for the pickup… Due to the last-minute reservation, I received emails from other companies stating they couldn't arrange a guide or were still confirming, but I quickly received a confirmation email from this company. The hotel I stayed at was in a location where most tours wouldn't pick up, but they came to get me (there is an additional fee). Since I usually don't drive and toured with a rental car on the day of arrival, I found the signs confusing and kept missing turns, so I was very grateful for the pickup. During the tour, the guide was not only knowledgeable but also considerate, suggesting routes with good views and taking photos to ensure we had a great time. They provided knee supports and gloves to protect our hands, which showed their thoughtfulness. On the way back, they took me to a sightseeing spot where I had trouble finding the turn the day before, and they even guided me to the meeting point for the next day's Jomon Sugi tour (which I booked with a different company and drove to the meeting point). I was pleased to hear they also accommodate English speakers, so I definitely want to request their services again when my overseas friends visit. Thank you very much!
