Schedule

  1. Hotel Pickup for Guests ※Miyanoura–Koseta–Anbo–Onoaida Area
  2. Be Greeted by Our Exclusive Private Bus or Chartered Car Service
Please relax and enjoy a good rest during the ride.
  3. Arrive at Arakawa Trailhead ⇒ Begin Trolley Track Trail
Flush toilets for men and women are available at the trailhead. After getting ready, you'll begin the long trek along the trolley track trail.
*From late autumn through winter, it may still be dark in the early morning—headlamps are recommended.
  4. Kosugidani Bridge ⇒ Kosugidani Village Ruins
Around 1960, approximately 540 people lived in this area, which thrived as a frontline base for logging the primeval forest.
  5. Kusugawa Junction ⇒ Sandai Sugi (Third-Generation Cedar)
A bio-toilet is available at Kusugawa Junction. About 10 minutes further along the trolley track trail stands Sandai Sugi, a giant cedar tree that has survived across three generations—just as its name suggests.
  6. Nioh Cedar ⇒ Ōkabu Trail Entrance
After passing Nioh Sugi, which stands tall like a guardian statue, you’ll enter the Ōkabu Trail and begin the main ascent. Be sure to use the flush toilet here, as there are no toilets for about five hours until you return from Jomon Sugi. Portable toilet booths are available.
  7. Ogisugi Tree Site
Estimated to be over 2,000 years old, this ancient cedar—though it fell in 2009—still retains a dignified presence, now covered in moss.
  8. Wilson’s Stump
Named after Dr. Wilson, an American botanist who studied Yakusugi trees during the Taisho era, this stump reveals a heart-shaped hollow when you crouch inside and look up. ♡
  9. Daiō Sugi (Great King Cedar)
Towering for over 3,000 years, Daiō Sugi reaches a height of about 25 meters and boasts a trunk circumference of roughly 16 meters.
  10. Meoto Sugi (Married Cedars)
Two separate cedar trees join together around 10 meters above the ground, resembling a loving couple holding hands.
  11. Jomon Sugi
The undisputed king of Yakushima’s cedars, Jomon Sugi stands with majestic presence, greeting trekkers with its awe-inspiring form.
  12. Begin Descent
  13. Arrive at Arakawa Trailhead
You’ll be picked up by a private bus or hire car arranged by the tour operator. Great job today—feel free to rest on the way back!
Please note that arrival time may vary depending on the total number of trekkers participating that day, both in this tour and across Yakushima.
  14. Drop-Off at Guest's Hotel

There were members in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, and because of the higher age range, the guides were betting on whether they could catch the 5 PM bus. One of the female members, who mentioned her legs were hurting, was told, "It's because you're overweight." While there were some who couldn't catch the 5 PM bus, they were trying hard to make it back together. However, they were not waited for and were told, "Why not just share a taxi?" I won't be using this service again because of such guides.40,50,60代の方がいるメンバーで、年齢層が高いためガイド同士が17時のバスに乗れるのか賭けをしていました。

We hadn't exercised at all, and after visiting Taiko Rock by ourselves the day before, we were exhausted and faced the Jomon Sugi trekking with incredible muscle pain. Thanks to the guide's fun explanations and kind advice, we were able to see Jomon Sugi! ✨ I'm really grateful! ✨ The miso soup served for lunch was also very delicious! Thank you very much! ✨ I highly recommend it!

Is this really a guide? Or just someone leading the way?

There were five of us climbing together. One person sprained their ankle, and while two others fortunately didn't get injured, they slipped down 2-4 meters. One person had to retire from the climb. However, in other groups, the guides were considerate, encouraging everyone to support each other as they climbed. I know my lack of stamina played a part, but I wish the guide had managed the pace better and shown more care. It's disappointing, especially since we paid the same fee. I don't think I'll be going back to Yakushima again.

"Umbrella" is necessary for mountain climbing!

I never imagined bringing an umbrella for mountain climbing, but everyone should have one. Then there's stamina and strength. The last bus isn't at 18:00; we have to coordinate with the other groups. While climbing, all I could think about was the return bus, and the guide kept urging us, saying, "We are the last ones." Based on my experience at the gym, I probably walk at about 5 km/h. However, if the guide determines that I can't keep up, they repeatedly say, "Please think about the return." Based on my experience at the gym, I probably walk at about 5 km/h. However, if the guide determines that I can't keep up, they repeatedly say, "Please think about the return." I had no choice but to retire. I waited for two hours in the mountains. The guide had six people with him, so I had to wait until everyone else returned from Jomon Sugi. I was told by the guide to leave my belongings at Wilson Stock and climbed up with just myself, so when the rain started pouring, I was at a loss. Naturally, even though I had my phone, there was no signal. This time, I was painfully reminded of my own naivety.

First, it's great that you can take a bus directly from the accommodation to the trailhead. I appreciated that the guide took many photos for us.

However, there were quite a few concerning points.

1. The dedicated bus also had customers from other companies. Each group departed and returned separately. At the beginning of the hike, the guide mentioned that since it was a dedicated bus, we could take our time. I thought it was going to be a relaxed tour. However, since the other group's return was earlier, I felt rushed to return as well, likely to avoid keeping that group waiting for too long. Even though my feet hurt and I couldn't walk quickly, the guide walked ahead alone. In contrast, I noticed that other guides were walking at a pace that matched their customers while providing various explanations. I was honestly surprised to see a guide moving ahead and leaving the customers behind. It was disappointing, and I felt there was a lack of consideration.

By the way, it seems that buses from the trailhead run until 6 PM. So, for those who want to walk at their own pace, you should be able to catch this bus. Therefore, if you prefer to go at your own pace, this tour may not be suitable for you, as you will have to keep up with the other group, making it quite tough in the latter half if you go slowly.

2. The enjoyment of this tour varies depending on the guide.

The male guide in his 60s who was in charge seemed to lack deep knowledge about nature overall. He provided brief explanations of famous spots at key points, but for other topics, he often didn't share information unless asked. There were also instances where he didn't know the answers to my questions. I overheard other guides providing much deeper explanations. I felt I had a rather unfortunate experience with this guide.

We specifically paid for a guide because we wanted to learn various things. I would like all guides to be thoroughly educated to provide information that matches the cost. When you end up with a guide who isn't knowledgeable, it doesn't differ much from going on your own and researching information. I felt it was a waste of money.

During the hike, I wanted to learn more about Yakushima's nature, but most of the conversation revolved around his personal life. Honestly, I wished he would refrain from such discussions while we were hiking in Yakushima. I wanted to ask about plants and animals, but he seemed to lack knowledge in that area, which was very disappointing. Additionally, I felt that because we were in our 20s, he spoke to us in a casual tone rather than using polite language. While that was fine, there were several moments where his tone was quite harsh and intimidating. There was a moment when I wanted to take photos at a certain spot, but he suddenly said in a stern tone that if we didn't hurry, we wouldn't get to take pictures, which made me feel rushed. I was surprised because I expected the guide to inform us about the pace from the beginning and lead us accordingly. I thought he lacked consideration in this regard as well.

Moreover, it seemed that the guide smoked during the hike, and the smell was a bit strong.

If you want to learn a lot about Yakushima, I recommend booking with a service where you can find out in advance how much information the guides possess, rather than this one.

If you think you might get lost on the way to Jomon Sugi or want someone to take photos for you, this tour might be a good option.

It was not a trip, but a struggle. If it had been sunny, the 22 km round trip hike in 10 hours might have been more enjoyable, but the long journey in the rain was cold. I strongly recommend avoiding rainy days if you have flexibility in your schedule. I strongly recommend avoiding rainy days if you have flexibility in your schedule. The long ascent on the stairs in the second half was tough, of course, but the boards on the wet trolley path were slippery, making it really difficult to walk. That day was truly a battle with myself; I participated with my daughter, and I believe I was able to show her, as a parent, the attitude of "never giving up and doing my best until the end."

There were seven tour participants (including one elderly woman whose shoe sole came off, leading to her unfortunate retirement → waiting). Including the guide and my daughter, all six others were in their 20s, and I was the only one in my 50s. The young people walked really fast, and I was struggling to keep up. I had heard that I needed to walk at the guide's pace, but it was fast, too fast. I wished they would walk a bit slower. I believe we could have finished the descent on time even if we walked more slowly.

To make matters worse, about a third of the way back on the trolley path, I slipped and fell, injuring myself. Even two weeks later, my tailbone still hurts. My toenail has also become a blood blister and is still black.

Additionally, standing in front of Jomon Sugi, I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment, but the stay was too short. Including lunch, it was only 30 minutes... After climbing all that way, I wanted to stay a bit longer. I wanted to take more photos and videos. Initially, we arrived at Jomon Sugi 40 minutes earlier than the explanation we received at the airport upon arriving in Yakushima...

The young guide was kind, lending me a walking stick and serving everyone miso soup during lunch, but it turned out to be a very regretful tour. Also, for us as beginner hikers, the prior explanation about what clothes to wear was unclear. I wished they had specified "rainwear" for both top and bottom.

I had a fun trip to Jomon Sugi and back, but I was told that the shuttle bus wouldn't depart until everyone was gathered, and I ended up waiting for an hour and a half. If this had been explained from the start, I could have taken my time more, and I think there could have been options for those who were late to take a taxi down the mountain. In the end, it became less enjoyable.

- The guide was mean, and just thinking about it makes me angry.
- They only seemed to care about getting back and forth quickly. (This felt like the overall policy of the company, which raises questions.)
- Their voice was so quiet that I couldn't hear them, and when I tried to ask questions or clarify, I was ignored. At first, I thought they just didn't hear me, but after being ignored multiple times, it was clear it was intentional. As a result, even if I had questions during the trip, I couldn't ask.
- They only wanted to talk about themselves and their achievements, and they were persistent until I reacted.
- I had lost the desire to talk, and then I saw another group where the younger people laughed at everything, which made me think how nice that was.
- They repeatedly said they would carry someone if they got injured, but only if they were cute.
- When I jokingly mentioned to a friend that I wanted to ride the trolley because I was tired, they said, "You can ride if you break your neck." I couldn't believe my ears.
- I slipped and fell on the way back, but there was no care offered, and even though I was walking in a safe area, I was told it was my fault for not being careful.
- For some reason, the guide went to the back on the return trolley path, and I was forced to walk at the front while being told to speed up, with no chance for a bathroom break. I wasn't even informed about the timing for the last restroom stop.

There are countless issues I could mention, but overall, the guide had no intention of making the experience enjoyable and was self-centered, wanting only to be praised.

I participated in the trip alone, and it was quite exhausting as I was the only one among three couples. It seemed like other groups also had individuals added to their pairs. The guides were numerous, and some lacked consideration, so it might be better to choose your tour company carefully. On the second day, another tour company mentioned that they were considerate in organizing their groups. I hope this helps those who will go next.

This time, I participated for the first time with my father and wife. Since my father is elderly, I was worried, but he really wanted to go, so I trained on my own until this day.

However, on the day of the event, it was pouring rain. Although it wasn't a warning level, I thought I had prepared the necessary equipment and decided to go ahead. The day before, I received a call from VELTRA to confirm the necessary equipment.

But when we were about to depart from the Arakawa trailhead, the guide mentioned that our rain gear (I personally had waterproof rainwear bought from a shop) was not adequate, and we had to choose whether to cancel or proceed. I decided, considering my father's age, that the three of us would cancel.

The reason for my disappointment in this experience is that there seemed to be a misunderstanding regarding the rain gear. It's true that our understanding and interpretation of rain gear was at a beginner level. However, I honestly wished for more detailed instructions, such as "You need rain gear that is highly waterproof and retains warmth," from the confirmation the day before. If such instructions had been provided (ideally a few days earlier), we could have taken action to purchase or rent appropriate rain gear. I would like to express my strong opinion to prevent cancellations arising from ignorance for others like us in the future.

Perhaps due to the bus schedule, instead of sticking to the paved path, we ended up walking on unpaved trails based on the guide's judgment. This led to my other boot breaking as well, causing me to fall and injure several toenails, resulting in a sprain and bruising, which made me unable to participate in another tour the next day. I regret that if I could have descended slowly with the other tours that came down earlier, I might not have had to push myself and could have avoided injury. I hope the guide will consider the safety of the participants in their decisions.

As for the rental equipment, the shoes were good as they checked the size before lending them, and everything else was clean. However, during the tour, I was too focused on the time and couldn't enjoy the scenery at all. I would recommend other tours for beginners or those who want to fully enjoy nature and observe plants.

When applying, there was a section to fill out about mountain climbing experience and usual exercise levels, so I thought there would be a support system for beginners. However, on the day, there was an atmosphere that seemed to disregard beginners.

Overall, I felt the quality of the guide was low.

- Communication
The guide was more like a pace-setter walking ahead rather than a true guide. They provided explanations at key points, but the content was very superficial. It would have been better to walk alone and read the informational signs. I asked the guide several times about plants and nature, but they mumbled and evaded my questions. They were probably not a professional guide, but rather a seasonal worker for the summer.

It would have been better to walk alone and read the informational signs. I asked the guide several times about plants and nature, but they mumbled and evaded my questions. They were probably not a professional guide, but rather a seasonal worker for the summer.

- Photography
At the photo spots, the guide took commemorative photos with their smartphone. As a result, there was no time to take pictures with my own camera. This was likely to save time. At first, I thought it was convenient, but I was surprised when I received the photos on the way back. They were taken with an iPhone's portrait mode, and the important Yakusugi and Jomon Sugi were out of focus (laughs). I couldn't help but laugh. While it makes for a funny story, as mentioned earlier, I couldn't take any photos with my own smartphone. I should have at least taken pictures of my companions. The memories consist of countless blurry photos of Yakusugi (laughs). By the way, the composition of the photos was also disastrous. If you're mainly going for photography, I wouldn't recommend this tour.

- Overall Tour Guide Experience
It’s not that the guide I had was particularly bad. I encountered about ten guides, and all of them had strong personalities. There were various types, including an aggressive older man who pressured the tour participants and another older man who only spoke to young women. To be honest, considering personality, our guide who didn’t talk much seemed better. I want you to understand that it was that bad.

- Issues with the Tour
The tour participants all took the same bus to the trailhead, which had nearly 60 people on board. It’s easy to imagine what happens when they all start at the same time. Most guides maintain the same pace, so it becomes crowded no matter where you go. You can’t relax at the photo spots, and despite being in Yakushima, the situation is perpetually crowded. If that’s the case, it would be better to go alone to enjoy the true essence of Yakushima.

- In Summary
Be cautious when booking a guide. The website states "guide required," but that’s to be expected since the site is run by those involved in guiding. If you have about six hours of hiking experience, I think it’s fine to go alone. The trails are well-maintained and quite easy to navigate. I believe beginners should hire a guide. They did a great job managing the pace and successfully took all participants to Jomon Sugi. However, you shouldn’t expect more than that.

I don’t understand why this tour has such high ratings.

Now, to the main point. I am 59 years old and will soon be 60. I felt uncomfortable because it seemed that the guide was wary of my age, thinking I might retire or cause trouble. Although I may not look it, I have backpacked through 61 countries and have even climbed to the top of Mount Fuji. I always participate in hiking and mountain climbing abroad. Early in the tour, the guide mentioned to the group as a whole, "If I feel this person cannot make it to the top, they will retire." I was told this directly, and others felt the same way. I thought it would have been better if the guide had just told me directly if they thought I couldn't climb. I know that in climbing, the slower people go ahead, but it felt like they were judging me solely based on my age, creating an atmosphere that suggested I would be slow and unable to keep up, which really brought my spirits down before we even started climbing.

Points that particularly bothered me:

1. When I climbed the steep shortcut path on the trolley road and was out of breath, the guide said, "If you're out of breath from this, you won't make it to the top." It wasn't just "you can't do it," but rather it felt like a dismissive remark that really broke my spirit. At that moment, I resolved not to fall behind the guide's pace and to not inconvenience anyone, determined to see Jomon Sugi and make it back down. If the guide had said, "You did well. There are tougher parts ahead, but keep it up," I would have felt encouraged to say, "Yes, I will do my best and follow your lead."

2. When I was not around, another woman asked the guide from behind, "Is there an age limit for this tour?" and the guide mistakenly thought I had asked and replied, "Just one more year." Everyone heard this conversation. Is it appropriate for a guide to disclose personal information in front of other participants? Is it acceptable to share personal information on the Jomon Sugi tour? The guide also made comments to an older man, saying, "You're born in the year of the horse, right?" and "I share the same zodiac." (It seemed like they just wanted to appear younger by mentioning their age.) I felt that personal information was not being handled properly here. It is common sense in society that personal information should not be disclosed. Furthermore, after returning home, I confirmed that the age restrictions for this tour were only two points (10 years and older, and those under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian), and there was no mention anywhere that those over 60 were not allowed. This was the worst tour, and I really wished they had declined my participation from the start due to concerns about my age. I would have preferred to join the group with the other older guide. Since the guide mentioned it, please make sure to clearly state the age limit for this tour as 60 years old in the future.

I believe that guiding members to their destination within a time limit is a job that comes with pressure. However, it is disappointing to see such worries reflected in the guide's demeanor. I was truly, truly uncomfortable for the entire 10 hours. Most participants start with a sense of "excitement" and "anticipation," and I hope this is recognized once again. Thank you.

I was really disappointed because I went there with this purpose in mind. If they had informed us in advance that there was a possibility of postponing to the next day, I could have adjusted my itinerary accordingly.

It may be a cynical view, but I couldn't help but feel that the guide might not want to go out in bad weather.
