—
Arrive at Arakawa Trailhead → Start on the old rail path
The trail begins from the Arakawa Trailhead, which has separate flush toilets for men and women. After getting ready, the long trek starts along the old rail path. In summer, the sun begins to rise around departure time.
*The route may be reversed, starting from Shiratani Unsuikyo.
—
Kosugidani Bridge → Kosugidani Village Ruins
A historical logging village that once housed about 540 residents in 1960.
A bio-toilet is available at Kusugawa Junction. About 10 minutes along the rail path from there stands Sandai Sugi, a rare Yakusugi cedar that has survived through three generations—true to its name. In winter, the sun begins to rise near the end of the rail path.
—
Nioh Sugi → Enter the Ohkabu Trail
Pass the mighty Nioh Sugi, resembling a guardian statue. The steep ascent begins here. Be sure to use the last toilet before continuing—no toilets for the next 5 hours (toilet booths available).
—
Okina Sugi (Elder Cedar) Ruins → Wilson Stump
After passing Okina Sugi, the second-largest cedar after Jomon Sugi, you’ll reach Wilson Stump. This massive hollow stump is large enough to step inside. A natural spring flows from below, and when you look up, you’ll see a heart-shaped opening above.
—
Daiō Sugi (Great King Cedar)
A massive 3,000-year-old tree standing 25 meters tall with a 16-meter girth.
—
Meoto Sugi (Married Couple Cedar)
Two trees joined around 10 meters above ground, resembling a couple holding hands.
—
Jomon Sugi
The largest and most famous cedar on Yakushima. Its powerful presence will leave a lasting impression.
—
Kusugawa Junction
After crossing Tsuji Pass, the final climb to Taikoiwa begins.
—
Tsuji Pass → Taikoiwa Rock
After crossing Tsuji Pass, the final climb to Taikoiwa begins. Take a short rest at the bench before tackling this steep section, suited for more experienced hikers. As you ascend, sunlight breaks through the trees, revealing a breathtaking panoramic view of Yakushima from the top.
—
Mossy Forest (Mononoke Forest)
The most magical section of the trail, with over 600 types of moss in a mystical atmosphere.
Pass Nanahon Sugi, known for its seven straight branches growing from a single trunk. Continue past Kuguri Sugi and the trail junction before entering the Kusugawa Trail. In winter, sunset typically begins around this section.
Cross the Satsuki Suspension Bridge and pass by the cascading Hiryuu Otoshi Falls and the massive Iwai Rock. The finish point, Shiratani Trailhead, is just ahead. In summer, sunset begins shortly after arrival.

Dear Jima-yu Couple,
Thank you very much for participating in the trekking tour and for sharing your experience.
I am truly grateful to be your first guide (Tsugimura) for the photo and video shooting menu. It was a great experience for me as a guide to encounter various weather conditions, including both sunshine and rain, during our journey.
Yakushima has many wonderful places beyond Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo, so we sincerely look forward to your next visit to the island.

During the hike, Tsugimura-san taught us various things, and we were able to walk happily while playing games and quizzes. There were breaks along the way, and they adjusted the pace to match the participants, so even as a beginner, I could hike without any difficulty! Additionally, they took many photos and videos for us. The pictures and videos were ones we couldn't have taken ourselves, and even now that the trip is over, I'm still reminiscing about it. It seems that different scenery can be seen depending on the season, so I definitely want to participate again. I participated alone and it was my first mountain climbing experience, so I was filled with anxiety. However, thanks to Tsugimura's conversational skills and the personalities of the other two groups, I was able to enjoy the climb! Tsugimura's quizzes and various knowledge discussions made the time fly, and before I knew it, we had arrived at the top, which was impressive. I encourage everyone to join in as well! You won't regret it.

Dear No-n,
Thank you very much for participating in the trekking tour and for sharing your experience. Yakushima is known as a sacred place for solo travelers, but yesterday felt like a "team" experience that made it hard to believe you were traveling alone.
I have guided this course hundreds, if not thousands, of times, and depending on the participants, there are days when I can guide easily and days when it can be challenging. However, yesterday was a day where I could guide with ease.

Dear Sato,
Thank you very much for participating in the trekking tour and for sharing your experience.
I appreciate your effort in the snowy weather. I was a bit worried since it had been a while since I last guided a tour, but thanks to the three of you enjoying the walk, we were able to complete the trekking safely. Although we couldn't approach Taiko Rock due to the strong winds, please come back for a revenge tour.
I look forward to working with you again.

With a pace tailored for beginners, precise advice, and interesting anecdotes and conversations unique to a guide, I was able to visit Jomon Sugi, Taiko Rock, and the Mossy Forest all in one day. - On the day of the hike, it was incredibly sunny, possibly the clearest day ever (according to Tsugimura-san). If it had rained, we might have skipped some photo opportunities, and we might have even had to give up on the Shiratani Unsuikyo route, so we were really lucky. - To be honest, the route we covered in one day is quite tough, so I would recommend splitting the Jomon Sugi route and the Shiratani Unsuikyo route over two days for beginners (laughs).
■Profile of the poster - 33-year-old male and 28-year-old female. - Both are beginners with almost no mountain climbing experience. We prepared our basic gear at Workman and Uniqlo. I think renting hiking shoes was a good choice.
■Reflection on the day's itinerary 〇To Arakawa Trailhead - Around 4:20: A bus arrives near our hotel (close to the airport). - Around 5:30: We arrive at the Arakawa Trailhead and have breakfast. - Around 6:00: Start hiking.
〇Jomon Sugi Route - Around 6:30: The sky starts to brighten. We cross several bridges without guardrails on the trolley path, but since it just started and Tsugimura-san's lively talk keeps us going smoothly. - Around 8:30?: We arrive at the entrance to the Okubo Path. We take a leisurely bathroom break before tackling the mountain path. - Around 9:00?: We reach Wilson's Stump. - Around 10:30: We arrive at Jomon Sugi. (It was impressive, but honestly, from a distance, I felt that the giant cedar trees along the way were more overwhelming...) - Around 11:00: We have lunch just a bit below Jomon Sugi. Tsugimura-san surprises us with a "hot" treat, which helps us recover a bit from fatigue. The descent from there is slow because the wooden stairs that were tough on the way up are now damaging our legs. - Around 12:30: We return to the entrance of the Okubo Path. We catch our breath and head back along the trolley path. It's a monotonous path, but since we know it from before, our feet feel relatively light.
〇From the trolley path to the Shiratani Unsuikyo Route - Around 14:00: We arrive at Kusunokawa Split. It feels like the hard mountain path is starting right away, and the climb to Tsuji Pass feels quite long. There are several steep sections along the way, and combined with fatigue, our pace slows down. - After 15:00: We reach Tsuji Pass. After a short break, since no one else is coming up or down, we leave our bags and head to Taiko Rock. This was the steepest section of the tour. - Around 15:30: We arrive at Taiko Rock. Being able to enjoy the breathtaking view alone without other climbers was truly amazing. After taking some photos and a short break, we start our return. Since there was no one else, we could take the same route back, but it was still quite tough. (I heard the usual descent route to Tsuji Pass is even tougher, which was terrifying...) - Around 16:30: We leave Tsuji Pass and start descending. Unlike before, the ground is a bit muddy, but I didn't trip too much. The steps going down were quite challenging. - Around 16:45: We arrive at the Mossy Forest. I'm relieved that we made it to this must-see spot before sunset, but I know that if our pace slows down from here, we'll have to descend the dark mountain path, so we hurry to continue down. - Around 17:00: We quickly pass by the famous stream often featured in brochures for the hanging cedar and Shiratani Unsuikyo. I heard that the Shiratani Unsuikyo looks beautiful when the sunlight shines through, so while it was bright, it was a bit disappointing. - Around 17:50: Near the Great Resting Rock, my legs are nearing their limit. The paved stones and wooden stairs are hard, and I walk slowly like an old person, taking one step at a time.

In the past few days, the view from Taiko Rock has been stunning with the cherry blossoms in full bloom, creating a beautiful pink landscape.
I was able to see all the sights I wanted in one day, and it turned out to be a fun and amazing day!!

I will never forget the taste of the tonjiru that Tsugimachi-san prepared for us along the way.
I was also truly impressed by the skill with which Tsugimachi-san took numerous photos at key points.
If you're considering participating, I highly recommend rewatching Princess Mononoke before joining!
It was sunny while we were on our way to Jomon Sugi, but unexpectedly, rain fell that wasn't in the weather forecast, so we had to use our folding umbrella.

Tsugimachi-san adjusted the walking pace to match our physical condition, and along the way, he shared fun stories and quizzes with us. It was a fulfilling trek where we could connect with the great outdoors, something we don't usually get to experience!

Dear Ann,
Thank you very much for participating in the tour the other day. It was my first day operating independently, and since it was a tour walking to Jomon Sugi and Shiratani, I felt a bit anxious. However, from the start at the trailhead, the personalities of the three of you and the words I had heard beforehand, "We have spirit and determination," really helped me.

Since it was the middle of a three-day holiday, there were a total of 425 participants, and I believe we were able to reach the goal almost as planned thanks to the cooperation of the three of you.
One regret I have is that I couldn't show you the view from Taiko Rock, which is stunning on a clear day. I hope you can visit Yakushima again someday.
I believe there will be tough days in your long life ahead, but please use your experience in Yakushima as motivation to keep pushing forward.
Until we meet again, let's both take care of our health.
You can enjoy an enriching trekking experience with a professional guide on Yakushima!

After finishing the relatively flat trolley path, I thought we could make it since we had completed a quarter of the overall journey, but the climb after seeing the Wilson stump was tough. Following Tsugimachi-san's advice to narrow down our destination for better pace management, we gave up on Jomon Sugi and changed our course to head back to Kusukawa and aim for Taiko Rock, heading towards the Shiratani Unsuikyo route.
Tsugimachi-san is a veteran guide with 2,500 tours under his belt, so his calm and thoughtful judgment was greatly appreciated. Since I had booked a private guide, it was also great that we could make such flexible plan changes.
The weather was clear that day, and I was advised that the view from Taiko Rock would be absolutely beautiful. Personally, I wanted to see Taiko Rock, so I prioritized this, and it turned out to be a fantastic decision!
It seems that on some days, visibility can be so poor that you can't see even a meter ahead, but I was truly able to witness an unforgettable breathtaking view.
Additionally, I enjoyed Tsugimachi-san's talks along the way. It seems that the brain for walking and the brain for thinking or conversing require different movements, creating a multitasking state that is good for brain training, which was quite amusing!
By the way, there were many fun moments thanks to Tsugimachi-san's surprises and playful spirit, making it not just tough but enjoyable as well! Tsugimachi-san is a pro at creating wonderful Yakushima trekking memories.
This tour itself is quite challenging, so it might be tough for those who are not used to climbing up and down mountain paths or lack confidence in their physical fitness. However, the trekking guided by Tsugimachi-san was excellent, and I’m truly glad I chose this option!
Thank you for participating in the trekking tour and for sharing your experience. I learned about this tour through your review after reading past experiences. I truly appreciate it.
The course that walks to Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo in one day requires a good pace; otherwise, the return trip through Shiratani Unsuikyo will be in complete darkness, so a certain level of physical fitness is necessary.

As mentioned in your review, we significantly slowed down after the Wilson stump, and I thought we would end up returning through Shiratani Unsuikyo in the dark. I suggested either sticking to Jomon Sugi or turning back at the Wilson stump to head to Shiratani Unsuikyo, but in the end, I believe choosing Shiratani Unsuikyo was the right decision. On that day, we had one of the few clear days of the year, and the view from Taiko Rock was absolutely stunning, so I was even more delighted than the two of you (laughs).
Although we couldn't make it to Jomon Sugi, I think it was great that you were able to experience even a little of the joy, challenge, and beauty of trekking in Yakushima. If you have the opportunity, I hope you can build your stamina and take on the Jomon Sugi trekking challenge again.
We sincerely look forward to your next visit to the island.
If you have confidence in your physical strength, I definitely recommend it!

To clearly convey this to those considering this experience, I would say, "Having Mr. Tsugimura as your guide makes the experience exponentially more enjoyable!"
As mentioned in other reviews, his knowledge and conversational skills, along with his fun riddles, allowed us to enjoy the trek without feeling tired. I thought to myself multiple times how glad I was to have Mr. Tsugimura as our guide!
He also taught us some iPhone photography techniques, which was very educational!
In the future, if I have acquaintances who are going to participate in a tour in Yakushima, I will definitely recommend that they request Mr. Tsugimura. And when I participate in other tours in Yakushima, I want to permanently request Mr. Tsugimura!
It may seem like I'm praising him too much, but if you experience a Tsugimura tour, I believe you'll understand how I feel! ♪

We participated as a family of four: a couple in their late 40s, a high school daughter, and a middle school son. Since we only had three days off during spring break, we searched extensively for a tour that would allow us to visit Takoiwa, a place our children, who love "Princess Mononoke," wanted to go, while also satisfying my husband. I was very happy when I found Tsugimura's tour. At the same time, I had concerns about whether we could complete it without maintaining our stamina.

The night before, I felt the excitement of a school trip, but to conserve energy, we went to bed at 8 PM. On the day of the tour, meeting Tsugimura brought a sense of nervous anticipation, but once the tour started, those feelings quickly faded. His words, filled with love for Yakushima, were accompanied by a great sense of humor. The kids seemed to relax right away, allowing us to trek with peace of mind. It was tough, but perhaps the heavens were on our side, as it didn't rain, and we were able to conquer all the spots we wanted to visit. Tsugimura's guidance made the 12-hour tour feel like it flew by, providing a reassuring presence throughout.
Looking up at the long-awaited Jomon Sugi was a moment of quiet, overwhelming presence. The magnificent view from Takoiwa and the pink mountain cherry blossoms were breathtaking. Surrounded by the greenery of Shiratani Unsuikyo and the mossy forest, we felt the vastness of nature and a sense of accomplishment that couldn't be captured in photos. I truly believe that nothing surpasses real experiences!
If we had gone without a guide, we likely would have stopped often for photos and breaks, struggling to manage our pace, and might have missed some spots. Tsugimura, with his love for Yakushima, knew the best places and angles for photos, allowing us to look back and relive the journey's afterglow!
After the tour, my husband said, "I'm glad we had Tsugimura as our guide," and I couldn't help but do a little fist pump in my heart! The kids were also very satisfied to experience the world of "Princess Mononoke."
