Packages (2)

Schedule

  1. Pick-up at your accommodation (Miyanoura – Anbo area)
  2. ◆Important Notes
*Exact pick-up time will be confirmed by the guide the day before.
*This is a private tour. Selecting "Private guide" from the options is required.
  3. Arrive at Arakawa Trailhead → Start on the old rail path
The trail begins from the Arakawa Trailhead, which has separate flush toilets for men and women. After getting ready, the long trek starts along the old rail path.
In summer, the sun begins to rise around departure time.

*The route may be reversed, starting from Shiratani Unsuikyo.
  4. Kosugidani Bridge → Kosugidani Village Ruins
A historical logging village that once housed about 540 residents in 1960.
  5. Kusugawa Junction → Sandai Sugi (Three Generations Cedar)
A bio-toilet is available at Kusugawa Junction. About 10 minutes along the rail path from there stands Sandai Sugi, a rare Yakusugi cedar that has survived through three generations—true to its name. In winter, the sun begins to rise near the end of the rail path.
  6. Nioh Sugi → Enter the Ohkabu Trail
Pass the mighty Nioh Sugi, resembling a guardian statue. The steep ascent begins here. Be sure to use the last toilet before continuing—no toilets for the next 5 hours (toilet booths available).
  7. Okina Sugi (Elder Cedar) Ruins → Wilson Stump
After passing Okina Sugi, the second-largest cedar after Jomon Sugi, you’ll reach Wilson Stump. This massive hollow stump is large enough to step inside. A natural spring flows from below, and when you look up, you’ll see a heart-shaped opening above.
  8. Daiō Sugi (Great King Cedar)
    A massive 3,000-year-old tree standing 25 meters tall with a 16-meter girth.
  9. Meoto Sugi (Married Couple Cedar)
Two trees joined around 10 meters above ground, resembling a couple holding hands.
  10. Jomon Sugi
The largest and most famous cedar on Yakushima. Its powerful presence will leave a lasting impression.
  11. Kusugawa Junction
After crossing Tsuji Pass, the final climb to Taikoiwa begins.
  12. Tsuji Pass → Taikoiwa Rock
After crossing Tsuji Pass, the final climb to Taikoiwa begins. Take a short rest at the bench before tackling this steep section, suited for more experienced hikers. As you ascend, sunlight breaks through the trees, revealing a breathtaking panoramic view of Yakushima from the top.
  13. Mossy Forest (Mononoke Forest)
The most magical section of the trail, with over 600 types of moss in a mystical atmosphere.
  14. Nanahon Sugi → Kuguri Sugi → Trail Junction → Kusugawa Trail
Pass Nanahon Sugi, known for its seven straight branches growing from a single trunk. Continue past Kuguri Sugi and the trail junction before entering the Kusugawa Trail. In winter, sunset typically begins around this section.
  15. Satsuki Suspension Brg. → Hiryuu Otoshi Falls → Iwai Rock → Shiratani Trailhead
Cross the Satsuki Suspension Bridge and pass by the cascading Hiryuu Otoshi Falls and the massive Iwai Rock. The finish point, Shiratani Trailhead, is just ahead. In summer, sunset begins shortly after arrival.
  16. Around 18:30 Tour ends, Drop-off at your accommodation

The response from the organizing company is extremely inadequate. The tour guide has no hospitality at all.

I thought I would receive a response via email about whether I could rent the items, but I never heard back. I also wanted a different route than the one listed, but there was no response to that either. A few days ago, I decided to call, and they told me that I couldn't rent from my accommodation. When I asked what I should do, they said, "Find it yourself." I had made the reservation a month in advance... When I asked why there was no reply, they said, "It's written on the website, so there's no need to contact you." I thought they could at least introduce me to somewhere else. When I inquired about the reverse route, I was told, "We still don't know. It might not be implemented." I was planning to switch to another tour if the reverse route was not available, but the response a few days ago that they didn't know was very troubling.

In the end, they said, "We will implement the reverse route," but there was another issue on the day of the tour. Due to the location of the hotel I was staying at, I was placed in the regular route team instead of the reverse route team. Moreover, this guide had absolutely no hospitality. There was no time to take photos, and even when I stumbled and was crouching down, they didn't come back to help. They were just a mere guide who only cared about time and went ahead without waiting for anyone. They did provide explanations as a guide, but their voice was too quiet, and they spoke without waiting for the last person, making it almost impossible to hear.

Additionally, due to the rain, we ended up not going to Shiratani Unsuikyo and instead had the regular Jomon Sugi tour, but the price remained the same. It was truly the worst tour. I strongly recommend avoiding this company.

Dear Nakai,

Thank you for sharing your experience.

First, regarding the rental, we are currently improving our system to clearly indicate which areas are available for rental and which are not at the time of request.

As for the reverse route request, please note that Shiratani Unsuikyo may become inaccessible due to heavy rain and rising water levels, so we can only determine this on the day of the tour, based on the guide's judgment. This information is also clearly stated on our website.

Finally, we sincerely appreciate your feedback and aim to transform from "definitely not recommended" to "a company you can recommend."

Since it was forecasted to rain in the afternoon, we decided to go from Shiratani to Jomon Sugi instead of the usual route from Jomon Sugi to Shiratani. From the morning shuttle, the guide seemed to be concerned about the bus schedule. It appeared that he was tired from guiding five consecutive tours and I could already sense that he wanted to return on the 5 PM bus. This was mentioned multiple times afterward, making me feel pressured to hurry back.

On the way there, we took appropriate breaks and he even took photos for us, making the challenging journey enjoyable. However, the return from Jomon Sugi was a completely different experience; he walked ahead without guiding us at all, creating a distance that made it feel like there were ten people in our small group of just three. I found myself envious of the other tours. When my friend's shoe broke, another nearby guide suggested a quick fix, but our guide hurried on, ignoring it. In the end, my friend's shoe ended up in a terrible state, and another guide had to step in to help.

By the time we were walking on the tramway, it started to rain, but we rushed ahead to catch the 5 PM bus, walking at an incredible speed and overtaking several other tours. We were so focused on keeping up that we couldn't enjoy the scenery around us. We never even mentioned wanting to return on the 5 PM bus.

To top it all off, when we finally arrived at the bus stop just before 5 PM, there were too many passengers, and we couldn't get on. The guide then strongly told me it was our fault for being late! He ordered us to buy bus tickets quickly, but since we didn't know how, we had to ask others around us for help. Shouldn't a guide assist with that?

We were told to place our backpacks near the entrance while waiting for the bus, but no one else did. Normally, I would expect the guide to put down his own backpack in such situations. I felt there was a complete lack of consideration. When it was time to board the bus, he casually slipped in behind us. It was frustrating. The return shuttle ride was rough and scary. Overall, it was a very disappointing tour.

Given that work style reforms have been recommended for quite some time, shouldn't the guide's working conditions be reviewed? If fatigue leads to poor judgment and an accident, it could have serious consequences. I would like to visit Yakushima again, but I will never use your tours again.

Dear Haru,

Thank you for always using VELTRA.

We sincerely regret that your trip to Yakushima, which should have been enjoyable, was marred by the attitude of the guide. On behalf of the local operating company, we apologize for this. We have confirmed the details you pointed out with the local operating company and would like to report back to you. At VELTRA, we acknowledge your concerns as valid, but we hope you can consider the following report from the operating company as one perspective.

First, let me explain the difference in the guiding speed during the outbound and return journeys. While we do monitor the pace and condition of customers at the back during the return trip, the descent involves more downhill sections. It can be dangerous to look back while explaining, so the guide provides photo opportunities and explanations during the ascent.

Regarding the issue with your friend's shoe sole coming off and how another guide handled it, the guide on duty attempted a temporary fix by tying it with shoelaces and planned to apply tape and crampons in a safe, flat area.

Thank you for reporting the guide's remarks. We regret to inform you that there are discrepancies between the reports from the operating company, making it difficult to verify the exact statements made. We apologize for this. However, we recognize that the guide's care and communication with customers were indeed lacking.

It is unfortunate that the guide did not communicate effectively regarding taking photos and providing explanations during the ascent, performing proper first aid when the shoe issue arose, and ensuring thorough follow-up on the purchase and boarding of the return bus ticket.

The enjoyment of the tour can greatly depend on the guide. Moving forward, we will work with the operating company to cultivate guides who can provide a satisfactory experience for our customers, including a fundamental review of guiding practices and methods.

Thank you very much for taking the time

We were picked up by our guide at around 4:30 AM at our accommodation and headed to the entrance of Shiratani Unsuikyo. Along with the two of us, there were five others in our group, making a total of seven participants.

Since we started in complete darkness with headlamps, we couldn't enjoy the scenery at all. About 1.5 hours into the hike, when we stopped for breakfast at a mountain hut, it finally became bright enough to see our surroundings.

We passed through the mossy forest that inspired "Princess Mononoke," jumped at Taiko Rock, and enjoyed our lunch at the Wilson Cedar stump.

Once we reached the trolley path, it became monotonous and very boring.

The Jomon Cedar was truly magnificent, but we could only view it from a wooden deck under construction, so we couldn't get as close as I had hoped. Even taking photos from a distance didn't convey the impressive scale.

I understand it's for protection, but honestly, I wish we could have gotten a bit closer.

Also, I think the course that covers both Shiratani Unsuikyo and Jomon Cedar in one day would be tough for those who don't usually exercise. There was someone in our group who seemed to be in pain with their knees.

There were many rocky areas, and the stairs had significant height differences, putting a lot of strain on the knees.

On the way back, while some people took a shortcut on the trolley path to catch a bus, we decided to follow our guide back via the mountain-crossing Unsuikyo route. It took about 1.5 hours longer than taking the bus, but I was glad we did it because I wanted to see the Unsuikyo scenery in the daylight.

If you exercise regularly, as long as you go at your own pace, it shouldn't be too tough.

Initially, there was a problem with the phone connection, but they were responsive. However, I wished there had been better communication between the company and the tour guide. The trekking was very enjoyable. I was a beginner, but since I usually exercise, it was challenging, yet I managed to have fun!

I experienced a greedy course where I visited Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo in one day! It was quite hard, but the guide was entertaining, and I reached the top in no time. The uniquely shaped cedars seemed to be alive like people. It felt like each cedar had its own story. The moss looked like a work of art. I was so happy to enter a world I had dreamed of since childhood. Thank you very much!1日で縄文杉と白谷雲水峡のところに行くよくばりコース?

(^ω^)!
I was unsure whether to visit Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo separately, as many people do, but I decided to do both in one day to reduce the load of my hiking gear and save on rental costs. The return trip on the trolley path felt longer than I imagined, but the guide adjusted the pace and breaks, so I was able to return safely. I received a lot of green energy and had a great time!

During my first visit to Yakushima, I wanted to see as much as possible in my short two-night, three-day stay, so I chose this challenging course. During my first visit to Yakushima, I wanted to see as much as possible in my short two-night, three-day stay, so I chose this challenging course. (laughs) I had only done a six-hour mountain trek once before and had no experience, and since I usually work in an office, I was filled with anxiety, but I managed to get through it!

Unfortunately, the weather on the day in Yakushima was rainy all day, with temperatures around 3° to 5° near the summit, and the footing was somewhat poor. There were several times I thought I couldn't go on! However, the sense of accomplishment after walking for 12 hours was immense.

Even with my Gore-Tex rainwear, I ended up getting wet inside, so I was really glad I brought a change of clothes.

The guide was very helpful, sharing information about Yakushima and pointing out highlights along the way. That day, my group had the tour all to ourselves!

Other guides were handing out snacks, so there might be some differences depending on the guide (laughs).

When it was raining, the view from Taiko Rock was completely obscured, and everything was white. That was a bit disappointing, but it was definitely worth seeing with my own eyes.

I noticed a few people from other tours who had to retire along the way, so I think whether you can complete it or not varies by individual. However, if you can handle a six-hour mountain climb, I believe you can reach the goal without retiring.

As for Jomon Sugi, it is now surrounded by nets, and you can only see it from a very far distance, which was disappointing.

I ran into some local guides at a bar, and they mentioned that this course is chosen by only about 20 out of 300 people, making it an athlete's course (laughs). If you're considering this, keep that in mind and prepare yourself, and you might find it manageable!

Next time, I want to take my time and enjoy the nature of Yakushima even more, as it is such a wonderful place!

I was planning my schedule for the weekend, Friday to Sunday, while participating from Fukuoka. I really wanted to visit these two places, so I found a tour that goes to Jomon Sugi on Saturday and Shiratani on half of Sunday. However, since my flight back to Fukuoka is at 11:00, I thought it would be impossible to do a tour on the third day, and I was considering returning via Kagoshima. While searching, I found this site. I actually visited both places and was able to enjoy satisfying trekking.

The departure was from Shiratani Hiroba. The path was muddy due to the rain, but the moss in the mossy forest was beautifully fresh. When I reached the trolley road, the rain had stopped, and the route was smooth and not crowded, allowing us to reach Jomon Sugi. The guide explained that if we started from the Arakawa trailhead, we would have to march while stepping on the railway ties, which would be crowded, so we climbed from here instead. However, I regret that after parting ways with the guide and descending to Arakawa, there was a discrepancy in the schedule and bus times, causing us to return to the hotel late.

Next, I would like to aim for a day trip to Mount Kuju.

I was worried about the weather and my physical condition, but I managed to do a proper warm-up and took on the challenge. While I was able to maintain my stamina, I did twist my ankle a bit, possibly due to my usual lack of exercise.

There were seven participants this time. One person injured their foot and had to wait at a rest point (they missed seeing Jomon Sugi, but they were able to visit Shiratani Unsuikyo), and another person participated until the end despite being in pain. Despite these challenges, we adhered to the final deadline and completed the course in about 12 hours and 30 minutes (which was an hour later than usual). This course is known to be hard, to the point that some guides refuse to take it, and one guide reportedly suffered a stress fracture due to doing this route repeatedly.

However, despite the busy schedule, the satisfaction of being able to see the highlights of Yakushima's trekking in one day was immense.

This time, there were discrepancies between the tourists and the guides regarding preparations, which caused some confusion about what to bring. We prioritized decisions based on the situation on-site, which turned out well (though there were some gaps in explanations). There were similar issues with other items needed (it seems that what's necessary can vary by season), and I felt a strong desire for more standardized guidelines.

It seems that the only course that covers Shiratani Unsuikyo, Taiko Rock, Wilson Stump, and Jomon Sugi in one day is this one from Veltra. The meeting time is at 4:30 AM, and we disband around 5 PM to 6 PM. Whether you choose just the Shiratani Unsuikyo course or just the Jomon Sugi course, you will still experience muscle soreness the next day. In that case, it might be better to do it all at once (laughs).

Whether you choose just the Shiratani Unsuikyo course or just the Jomon Sugi course, you will still experience muscle soreness the next day. In that case, it might be better to do it all at once (laughs).

However, this course is for those who are physically fit and confident in their stamina, as it is designed for the chosen ones. I, who honestly underestimated it and don’t usually exercise much, ended up waiting at Wilson Stump while the other members went on to Jomon Sugi. I was satisfied that I was able to reach Taiko Rock (which was incredibly beautiful on that clear day) – it felt like a miracle.

Also, I felt it was great to have a guide because they not only know the paths well but also consider the pace. Before the tougher climbs like Taiko Rock and Jomon Sugi, they suggested leaving our backpacks behind (which is something beginners might not think of). Thank you, Mr. Shimozono. I look forward to your help again next time! ^^*

The day before it rained, so I was worried about the weather, but luckily it only drizzled. Moreover, because of that, there was a rainbow in the view from Taiko Rock! Waking up at four in the morning and walking for nearly half a day was quite tough, but it was worth it.

Thank you for your submission about your experience. Many customers visiting Yakushima come for a 2-night, 3-day stay. If you want to see both Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo, this course is recommended, but it can be quite challenging if you're not physically fit. Next time you visit, please consider changing the season and either walk each course one by one or explore other courses that you haven't visited yet.

It was raining, so I started my hike from Shiratani Unsuikyo and got to see the moss-covered forest around dawn! It had a very mystical atmosphere and was amazing! Unfortunately, there was fog from Taiko Rock, but I descended to the tramway and headed to Jomon Sugi. The journey was long and tough, but if you're going to Yakushima, I think it's great that you can visit both in one day.

I wasn't even that familiar with "Princess Mononoke," yet I thought about going to Shiratani Unsuikyo, which turned out to be a fateful decision. "Trekking" sounded easy, but it was a proper mountain climb.

It was much more of a climb than I imagined, the path to Taiko Rock suddenly became steep, the trolley path was way too long, and it was far from the point where the trolley path joined to the Arakawa trailhead. I could feel lactic acid building up in my arms along the way, and it was really tough.

I usually don't exercise at all, and I only have the stamina and willpower to push through wanting to run a full marathon or climb Mount Fuji once a year, but this time felt the hardest.

I went to see Jomon Sugi, but Taiko Rock was unexpectedly impressive, and I felt just as moved. It was really tough, but the guide said, "If you split it up, it will be hard for two days, so it's better to do it in one day. Ideally, staying overnight and taking it slow is best," so if you're not going to stay overnight, it's better to do it all in one day.

It's tougher than I imagined (I can't say it enough), but it's manageable with willpower. The guide's perfect timing for encouragement and breaks really helped. It was impressive how friendly all the guides in Yakushima were; they were chatting with each other when passing by. On this course, you pass people who have already reached Jomon Sugi and are on their way back, so when it was tough, hearing "Keep going! You're almost there!" was surprisingly motivating.

I highly recommend you go. On the way back, since it was in the direction of the guide's home, I was grateful they dropped me off at a hotel that was outside their usual range.

Despite being hit by a series of typhoons before and after the tour, it was conducted as planned due to the timing of the schedule.

Essential items for this plan are a flashlight, an umbrella, and a raincoat. First, for about the first hour of the climb, it is completely dark, and without a flashlight, you won't be able to see anything. Additionally, Yakushima is famous for its frequent rain, so an umbrella is a must. I don't recommend a raincoat too much because you might get dehydrated from the humidity. Besides, you'll get wet anyway. The umbrella is to avoid losing body heat from being continuously drenched in rain, so it's ideal to move with a flashlight on your head and an umbrella in one hand.

During my participation, the weather was mostly rainy with occasional clouds and brief moments of sunshine. It might have been different without the typhoons, but I had received information that Yakushima is a rainy island, so I interpret it as typical weather for Yakushima. Still, walking through the mossy forest was refreshing and enjoyable. Of course, fatigue comes later, but the experience of trekking in Yakushima, a place you won't visit many times in your life, was wonderful.

I usually play sports, so I was confident in my stamina, but 13 hours was definitely tiring. However, it was a place I absolutely do not regret visiting! The veteran guide was reliable (he seemed to be over 70 years old, but he mentioned it was his fifth consecutive day). If you're going to Yakushima, I recommend this tour! In fact, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that if you don't go, you won't understand the purpose of coming to Yakushima.
